Educational trip to the springs of the Acheron River

In April, our Erasmus team organised an educational trip to the springs of the Acheron River (the mythic water path to Hades), in the context of the Physical Education course. The students had the opportunity to navigate near the springs, to test their archery and trampoline skills and to do rafting along the river. With the help of the wonderful weather conditions, the students and teachers enjoyed the natural beauty of the landscape and the calm waters of the Acheron river. This way, we served Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, as well as Goal 4: Quality education.

School Canteen: a healthy meeting point

We all know that we spend half of our every day in school, where healthy food is needed to keep us energetic, so our nutritional practice plays an important role there. Therefore, according to Goal 3: Good Health and Well Being and Goal 4: Quality Education, we arranged an interview with the lady owner of our school canteen in class. We had an interesting conversation with her answering our various questions about: best selling products, nutritional value, processed sugar ingredients, food packaging, cost and profit and student response towards diet habits.
It was a very useful and enlightening procedure having to do with one of the most famous and crowded meeting and “eating” points in school.

Open Event of our school: "Health and wellbeing for teenage students"

The open event entitled "Health and well-being for teenage students" was organized by our school in collaboration with the 2nd Department of Pathology of the General University Hospital of Ioannina and took place on 23rd January 2019 with great success and audience attendance.
The event was part of the Erasmus+ / KA2 "Agenda 2030: That's Our Challenge" program. The aim was to disseminate the objectives of the program to the general public and, in particular, Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing, Goal 4: Education and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
The results of the projects regarding teenage health were presented, implemented by Erasmus pupils, under the supervision of members of the scientific staff of the Clinic. In particular, by making the somatometric measurements and analyzing the statistic data obtained, the students understood the connection of "physical literacy” with health and nutrition.
At the same time, student slogans on the sustainable development of Agenda 2030 were displayed in the exhibition area, while experiential actions were implemented by the students themselves, such as measuring pressure and calculating the Body Mass Index for the people who attended. Our students were distinguished for their collaborative spirit, interactive participation and excellent presentation.

Working on three Global Goals

This morning our students worked on three Global Goals,  Goal 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal 3 Good Health and Well-Being and Goal 4 Quality Education. With the teachers Bono and Maddalena, they prepared a special Spicy Salt made with the organic herbs of our countryside. They learnt how to produce something good and healthy for cooking without use of additives.

Puberty and Hormones: a scientific matter

As teenagers our students attended the documentary "Science for Adolescence" in the Piraeus Bank Institute, a fact that gave them the opportunity to engage in an interactive and fruitful discussion and to rearrange their teenage priorities. This way they learned that every gender difference is mainly based on biological background and must be accepted. So, we enthusiastically served Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, Goal 5: Gender Equality, Goal 4: Quality Education and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

Together for Teenage Health

In the beginning of November, we had the honor of attending an interesting seminar organized by the Professor of the Pathological Clinic at the University Hospital of Ioannina, concerning the subject “Health in the Teen Age”. The purpose of the seminar was to educate students to better prevent and respond to possible physical and social risks that they may encounter both in school and in society. As we know, good health is a prerequisite for the development and progress of a society, so we must ensure that we are healthy and well mature through the knowledge of the necessary prevention and health programs. With this seminar we served Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals and Goal 4: Quality Education.

First, our Headmistress presented the action to all the educational community.

Then, students used puzzle pieces, showing bicycles, to find their partners to complete the “Tandem”.

Finally, the teams did activities to create confidence between them.

We must offer a quality education to our pupils, creating and affective climate environment where students can cooperate, collaborate, help and respect each other.

Sports days indoors or outdoors school are favourite days for students of all grades. This special day, we organized a sports event for our Erasmus+ students presenting new sports to them, like hockey for example, which is not very common in Greece. They eagerly took part in the competitive sporting activity and practically served Goal 3: Health and Well-Being, in a teamwork that tried to improve their physical exercise and form, while getting them to know that there are no boundaries in the sports spirit worldwide.

Celebrating the International Dance Day

The Committee of UNESCO defined the April 29th as the “International Dance Day” for each year. In order to celebrate it, we organized a school event in which we practically summarized some folk and modern, greek and international, dance styles to learn to overcome all cultural, political and ethnic boundaries. Dance helps to unite people in the name of peace and friendship, allowing it to speak the same language, serving Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being and Goal 4: Quality Education as well.

Working the Gooals through a Ecoaudit

Scientific Culture students of 4th ESO are working in the ecoaudit, part of the work included in the Erasmus+ project: “Agenda 2030: That’s our challenge!”

The topics to be discussed in the ecoaudit, by the students from Italy, Greece, Germany and Spain are: consumption and social responsibility, electricity, mobility, noise, water and recycling.

The organization of work has been the following:

First, the whole group of students taking part in Erasmus+ gathered during the break time and designed a series of question about the different themes above mentioned.

The next step took place in class; in work groups, we selected the questions, translated them into English and uploaded them to the eTwinning forum.

Each center uploaded their questions and we arranged a poll to select five questions about each topic.

Once the issues were selected, we designed some surveys to be passed on to the students in groups of 4th ESO so that we could study the results statistics.

Next, we will carry a study of the data, a comparison with the other centers answers and we will reach our conclusions.

Educational excursion to the villages of “Zagori”

Βefore Easter holidays, our Erasmus students visited a place of unique natural beauty and traditional culture, one of the main sights of Greece. “Zagorohoria” are a preserved settlement: built with gray stone houses and stone alleys, between high mountains, with unique special local food and desserts. Also, in the same place there is the famous “Vikos Gorge”, the largest and deepest gorge in our country.
Our students travelled there, where they enjoyed the walk in the nature. Then, they visited a folk museum to get to know the traditional culture, through handmade items of everyday life or works of art, that a local artist/collector gathered for the next generations to admire. They also visited a cultural institution where they enjoyed a photo exhibition about previous ways of living. Thus, students and teachers have served Goal 4: Quality Education, Goal: 17: Partnerships for the Goals and Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being.

Sustainable cosmetics

For many years the colleagues of the natural sciences in the CSO have been organizing the project week „sustainable cosmetics“. In this special school week the students produce their own cosmetics such as skin creams, soaps, bathing oils and many other products. The youngsters were always enthusiastic about how easy it is to make cosmetics themselves.
Due to the high demand, we decided to offer this project regularly all over the year. The new working group is called „Sustainable cosmetics“ and meets once a week for two hours. The cosmetics, that students take home and use, are very colorful and motivating. The Sustainability is based, for example, on the raw materials used to produce the cosmetics and on the bottles and skin-cream pots, that students bring from home. We reuse the containers several times, before they end up in trash.
Concerning production, the saying “less is more“ applies, so only the essentials are used. Since we produce our creams freshly, we are able to work without any additives such as preservatives. In the fridge, the products can be kept for at least two weeks. They can also be frozen in portions. Moreover, if desired, the products can be perfumed with essential oil. Everyone can choose their perfume individually – allergy sufferers can completely do without it. The raw materials are purely vegetable – no animal products are used.
The photos show students preparing bathing bombs and bathing oils. Furthermore, you can see the finished products from the students such as: creams, lip gloss, peelings, soaps, bathing bombs and bathing oils. The girls often lovingly pack their products in materials that would otherwise have been thrown away from their parents, such as old curtains. In this way, the youngsters are developing increasingly sustainable consumer behavior.

Blood donation: a gift of life

An important action on the voluntary blood donation took place in our. Nursing staff from the city's University Hospital informed our students about the conditions and, mainly, the benefits of this initiative for both the recipient of the precious blood and the one who offers it. Serving in this way the Goals 3: Good Health and Well-Being, 4: Quality Education and 17: Partnerships for the Goals, we realized that we can all benefit spending only 10 minutes of our time.
