“ Sunflower” Project

We, the students of the 8th grade of the Carlo-Schmid-High School in Berlin-Spandau, and our partner organisation "Proyecto Padrinos de Atiquizaya e. V. " would like to support pupils in Salvador. As the smallest country in Central America, El Salvador is at the same time the most densely populated, mostly industrialized, but also one of the most violent states whose children suffer from poverty and natural disasters. Many children do not get the chance to attend school for financial or geographical reasons.
We want to increase the educational opportunities of El Salvador's children with our donations. We plant sunflowers to sell them profitably at the Spandau weekly market. Our 7th classes also support the project by painting the flowerpots. The 3.00 € per flower goes to our partner organization, which forwards the proceeds to Atiquizaya, thereby financing school fees and school supplies.

Roma Armee

The eleventh grade of the Carlo Schmid School went to the Maxim Gorki Theater on the 22 September 2018. We watched a play "Roma Armee", which is about the discrimination of the "Sinti and Roma" minority in Europe. On the 8 October 2018 the main actor and director Sandra Selimovic came to our school to deliver a workshop. We did warm-up lessons about prejudice and thought about new perspectives on racism, violence or prejudice.
Later, we did a different body and move exercises with different emotions and music. We "fought" in teams first in slow motion and staged a fashion show where the other students had to guess which body part we wanted to exercise. In the last part of the workshop, we improvised a scene on a park bench. The task was to evict a person with gestures. Every figure had their own "character". In the end, we decided that the workshop was instructive. We learned how to be free and how to open up to others.

“Solidarity Day”

As part of our Christmas Activities our student have organized a “Solidarity Day”, including different workshops about how to find and reduce inequalities, a talk followed by a discussion about inequalities, a flea market to raise money for ONG's and sport activities. Congratulations to all the students that have participated and made possible the Solidarity Day.

Plastic bottle cap: a useful offer

On 3rd December, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we took a voluntary initiative for the organized development of a plastic cap collection network. The purpose of the action is to develop and activate recycling consciousness, voluntary spirit and social awareness, for the benefit of children with disabilities and financial assistance for the purchase of technical infrastructure of the local institution “MERIMNA”. We handed out a lot of plastic caps that had been collected since the beginning of the school year for this social purpose, since we had understood the principles, values ​​and importance of respecting the diversity of people with disabilities, as well as the equal rights they deserve. This way, we served Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals and Goal 4: Quality Education.

«Tandem» creating a happy and wealthy learning environment

As part of our Peer Mediation Program, we have presented a new action called «Tandem». Grade 9th students will help grade 7th students in order to create and maintain a happy and wealthy working environment where students feel secure and motivated to learn.

First, our Headmistress presented the action to all the educational community.

Then, students used puzzle pieces, showing bicycles, to find their partners to complete the “Tandem”.

Finally, the teams did activities to create confidence between them.

We must offer a quality education to our pupils, creating and affective climate environment where students can cooperate, collaborate, help and respect each other.

Global nutrition & consumption (SDG 2 and 12)

Last Wednesday, we went to an educational institute called EPIZ, who is working for sustainable and global learning. Six of our students and three teachers participated in a workshop concerning global nutrition and consumption with a focus on poultry exports from the EU to Ghana. At first, they taught us some facts about Ghana and poultry consumption in Europe. For example, in Germany many people only eat chicken breasts and legs. All the other parts, that we don’t like to eat, get exported to Africa. Countries like Ghana have a lot of problems with the European poultry then. On the one hand it’s so cheap that the farmers can’t sell their own chicken anymore, so they loose their jobs. On the other hand, due to the long way the poultry travels and the related process of defreezing and refreezing, the meat looses quality. When the chicken arrives at the Ghanaian markets, it often has gone bad and consumers get food poisoning of it. The Ghanaian meat would be much healthier and fresher. So not only does the European poultry make the people in Africa poor, but it also makes them sick. To get really deep into the topic, we played a simulation game, where we had to solve the conflict between the Ghanaian farmers and the EU. The workshop day was very interesting and taught us a lot about how our consumption affects people globally.

Our partner organization, called „Proyecto Padrinos de Atiquizaya e. V.“ , helps children in El Salvador. They collect money to pay scholarships for pupils who otherwise would not be able to visit school, since they have to work on coffee, banana or bean plantations. To support the project, the Carlo-Schmid-Oberschule organized a donation campaign. We, the pupils of the Spanish classes of the 7th and 8th grade, are collecting donations to improve the living conditions and educational opportunities of the Salvadoran pupils. Therefore, we plant sunflowers, decorate the flowerpots and sell the flowers for 3,00€ each. You would make us and the Salvadoran pupils very happy if you help us with your donation.

Venta de Girasoles

Nosotros, los alumnos de la Carlo-Schmid-Oberschule, estamos colaborando en el proyecto „Proyecto Padrinos de Atiquizaya e. V.“ para ayudar a los alumnos de El Salvador. Queremos conseguir dinero para que muchos niños puedan ir a la escuela y consigan un buen trabajo en el futuro. En El Salvador hay guerra y pobreza. Muchos niños no pueden ir a la escuela, ya que sus familias no tienen tanto dinero como para pagar los gastos escolares. Los alumnos del 7. y 8. grado están participando en este proyecto. Los del 7. grado se encargan de decorar las macetas de papel pintándolas y los del 8. grado se encargan plantar los girasoles e informarse más sobre girasoles y del país El Salvador en general. Lo que haremos será poner girasoles en las macetas decoradas y así venderlas por un precio aceptable (3,00 €). El dinero que ganemos lo donaremos al „Proyecto Padrinos de Atiquizaya e. V.“.

Wir, die SchülerInnen der 8. Klassen der Carlo-Schmid-Oberschule in Berlin Spandau, möchten mit unserem Partnerprojekt „Proyecto Padrinos de Atiquizaya e. V.“ den Kindern in El Salvador mit den Spenden helfen. Wir verkaufen Sonnenblumen für eine Spende von jeweils 3,00€ und geben den gewonnenen Betrag an unsere Partnerschule weiter, um einigen Kindern eine ordentliche Schulausbildung zu ermöglichen.
Unserer Schule ist es leider noch nicht gelungen unsere Partnerschule zu besuchen, da in El Salvador Krieg und Armut herrschen, dennoch wurden wir bereits schon mehrmals von SchülerInnen unserer Partnerschule besucht. Da viele Eltern in El Salvador das nötige Schulgeld nicht aufbringen können, müssen manche Kinder ihren Eltern auf deren Feldern behilflich sein. Wir sind dafür, dass auch dort die Kinder das Recht auf eine Schulausbildung haben und möchten die Spenden verwenden, um Schulmaterialien zu kaufen oder Schulgelder zu bezahlen.

Workshops and conferences about SDG's

The 22th of December was our last workday before the End of the Year. This day was an special date to work on actions related with the Goals of the Agenda 2030.
The students of Commerce prepared a solidary market with the support of the Town Council of Alaquàs and the money raised was donated to The Red Cross.
In addition, we collaborate with the association "Karamaa" in the collection of non perisable food for the refugees camps in Greece. We accompanied this action by an exposition and redactions of our students about the refugees.
Athletes of the paralympic association "Tetrasport" came to our school to talk about their preparation. We had also talks where the associations "Médecins sans Frontières" and Red Cross explained us their work.
